A Study of Roles and Function of Jeremianic Female Imagery, dissertation by M. La Rip

In these times, when the reading of sacred texts leads in all possible ways to excluding, not welcoming, and even killing the other, the urgency of finding ways in which the reading of Sacred Scripture contributes to peace, as the acceptance of the presence of the other, is unprecedented. In his fine dissertation dr. M. La Rip shows us the way. La Rip realized his innovative research in the extremely complex tribal and multireligious context of Myanmar. The central research question of the dissertation has been very much related to this context: to what extent can an exchange between an exegetical approach and an intertribal reading of the same biblical texts (of Jeremiah) be mutually enriching and contribute to processes of bridging tribal divides and to more hermeneutical competence?

The study consists of two parts. In the first part, several examples of female imagery in the book of Jeremiah are analyzed through a variety of exegetical methods. Active, but also passive representations of roles and functions of women such as Judah, Israel and Jerusalem become apparent. Some of these representations belong to a genre that has been called ‘prophetic pornography’.

Whereas the first part of the dissertation consists of a thorough exegetical approach, the second part of the study is empirically oriented. Now intertribal reading is practiced. Almost hundred ordinary readers from twelve different Myanmar ethnic groups and different social-political-cultural backgrounds are invited to read the same texts that were analyzed in the first part and start dialoguing with a partner group about their meaning and significance. Here a fascinating process develops in which important changes of perspective occur: of the meaning of the texts, but also, and perhaps in the first place, of the perception of the other readers, of the other tribe. Vague ideas about the context of the others are replaced by knowledge; prejudices by comprehension.

lt is amazing to see how the old, and sometimes difficult texts start to speak to the lives of these readers and enable bridging tribal divides. The cry of Rachel for her missing children becomes their own cry. The fact that Yahweh is also depicted as a compassionate mother invites readers to a new praxis, to establish a new relationship with the other, from other tribes.

The hermeneutical context of Myanmar is not unique. We find hermeneutical tribalism all over the world. It is therefore that La Rip’s book is so important. He teaches us how to do it, how to practice intertribal hermeneutics, how to bridge divides. He teaches us that the encounter with other readers is more than an exotic event, that it can be an epiphanic moment. This is what La Rip has given us: a real, new, and important contribution to intertribal hermeneutics.

Meeting One God in Many Texts. Festschrift for Eric Peels of the Occasion of his 25th Jubilee as Professor of Old Testament Studies

Twenty-five years ago, on january 13, 1993, Eric Peels (1956) inagurated as professor of Old Testament Studies at the Theological University of Apeldoorn. To celebrate this anniversary, colleagues and friends offer him this Festschrift. In discussions on difficult biblical texts concerning the ‘shadow sides’ to the Old Testament revelation of God, Eric Peels has always recommended to respect the transmitted texts of the Bible and to listen for a longer period of time instead of drawing smooth conclusins distancing oneself from the texts. This Festschrift comprises twenty-eight articles from Bible scholars as systematic theologians, specialists in Semitic languages and Assyriology, and a philosopher, who all follow this advice or interact with it. The topics adressed in the articles all relate to the them of the research program of the section ‘Biblical Exegesis and Systematic Theology (BEST) of the Apeldoorn and Kampen theological universities: ‘Who is Like You Among the Gods? The One and Three in a Pluralistic Context’.

Deze bundel neemt u mee in vijfenvijftig jaar Societas Hebraica Amstelodamensis. De SHA ontstond door toedoen van M.A. Beek, hoogleraar aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, voor allen die ‘in vuur en vlam zouden staan’ voor en door de Hebreeuwse Bijbel. De SHA is niet opgericht maar ‘geboren’ en het karakteristieke DNA is nog steeds de liefde voor de Biblia Hebraica, voor de taal en de adem van de tekst, voor de theologische lijnen die zich in en na nauwkeurige studie laten tekenen. De tekst, en niets anders dan de tekst was en is – zij het ook anders dan vroeger – het uitgangspunt. De karakteristieken van de SHA zijn nog steeds herkenbaar. De Amsterdamse Cahiers illustreren die ontwikkelingsgang. In dit volume vindt u de geschiedenis van de SHA geschetst aan de hand van typerende bijdragen van haar vijf voorzitters. Verder geschiedschrijving, en – heel handzaam – de titel van alle bijdragen van de leden door de jaren heen; en ook de index van eenendertig reguliere ACEBTs en vijftien delen uit de Supplement Serie, met tekstverwijzingen.

Een exegetisch-hermeneutische studie naar de dodenopwekking in Lucas 7,11-17 in relatie tot 1 Koningen 17,17-24 en Vita Apolloni IV,45, dissertatie door Nico Riemersma

 In deze studie staat het wonder centraal, in concreto het wonder van de opwekking van een dode jonge man, de enige zoon van een weduwe, door Jezus in de Galilese stad Naïn (Lucas 7,11-17). Het is een lastig genre, het wonderverhaal, waar velen moeilijk mee uit de voeten kunnen. Dat geldt in bijzondere mate voor wonderverhalen over dodenopwekkingen. Het probleem zit – simpel gezegd – in het gegeven dat wonderverhalen vertellen van gebeurtenissen die menselijkerwijs onmogelijk zijn.

De centrale vraag van het onderzoek is: hoe moet het wonder dat in Lucas 7,11-17 wordt verteld, in het licht van bovengenoemde problematiek, verstaan worden? In de klassieke exegese, maar ook daarbuiten, is de aandacht met betrekking tot het wonder lange tijd vooral gericht geweest op de historiciteitsvraag. Er was nauwelijks oog voor de wijze waarop het wonder in het verhaal wordt verteld. Dat aspect staat in deze studie centraal.

Aangezien met Lucas 7,11-17 nog twee andere verhalen verbonden zijn, te weten het verhaal van de opwekking van de zoon van een weduwe in Sarfat bij Sidon door Elia (1 Koningen 17,17-24) en het verhaal van de opwekking van een dochter van een Romeinseconsul door Apollonius van Tyana (Vita Apollonii IV,45), schenkt de auteur ook aandacht aan deze twee teksten, met de bedoeling om nog scherper zicht te krijgen op het eigene van het wonder in Lucas 7,11-17.

Ter herdenking van Henk Leene

Henk Leene (1937-2014) was als hoogleraar Oude Testament aan de Vrije Universiteit vooral bekend om zijn diepgaande en fijnzinnige uitleg van Jesaja 40-55. Zijn aandacht verbreedde zich in zijn latere werk tot andere profetische en psalmteksten waarin de belofte van het nieuwe wordt verwoord. In deze herdenkingsbundel zijn twee belangrijke recente publicaties van zijn hand opgenomen die beschouwd kunnen worden als de vruchten van jarenlang onderzoek. Samen met een aantal beschouwingen van naaste collega’s naar aanleiding van het werk van Henk Leene geven zij een intrigerend beeld van de profetische boodschap over het nieuwe.

Het evangelie naar Johannes herlezen met een catechetische blik, dissertatie door Doddy van Leeuwen-Assink

‘Is het evangelie van Johannes te lezen als een curriculum voor de catechese voor hen die in de Paasnacht gedoopt zullen worden?’ Die vraag liet Doddy van Leeuwen niet los. Haar stelling is dat het Johannesevangelie catechese bevat, waar we tot op de dag van vandaag wat aan kunnen hebben in de catechese én de exegese. In deze dissertatie komt ze met overtuigende argumenten, ontleend aan een grondig onderzoek van de verhalen van de evangelist Johannes zelf. Die teksten las ze met exegetische en godsdienstdidactische blik. Dat leverde verrassende, nieuwe inzichten op. De consequenties van die ontdekkingen laat ze zien in een praktische uitwerking met: a) een exegese van Johannes 12 en b) een uitgewerkte catecheseschets over datzelfde hoofdstuk.

A Text-Linguistic Analysis of Ezekiel 33-39 dissertation by Young Bok Park

 ‘All the restorative events in Ezekiel’s prophecy of restoration highlight the fulfillment of God’s aim in his design of the future. The aim is for all participants ‘to know God’ by the renewed establishment of his presence on earth. To that end, God will himself vindicate his Name in the sight of the nations, and he will do so by recreating his people and his land to become eternally visible signs of his presence for all of the world.’ With those words concludes the author this impressive study of Ezekiel 33-39. The findings in this research document are based on a computer assisted analysis of the linguistic data in Ezekiel 33-39.

Waar brengt het lezen van een tekst de lezer? Hoe verlooopt het leesproces via de sturing door talige en literaire tekstelementen? Hoe  gaat intertekstualiteit als specifiek leesproces in zijn werk? Welke ervaringen met eerder gelezen teksten worden ingebracht door de lezer die zich concentreert op bijvoorbeeld drie centrale teksten over Salomo? Op deze vragen geeft dit boek een antwoord. Via systematische taalkundige, literaire en intertekstuele analyses ontstaat er een meervoudig proces van kennisverwerving omtrent het gedrag van (de narratieve) Salomo, diens beeldvorming en queeste. Het resultaat is verrassend. Hij blijkt niet de vrome, ideale en wijze koning van Israël maar als Davids antipode een faraofiguur te zijn.

 Metals played a key role in the development of the ancient civilizations in the Near East. This importance is reflected in the use of metals and their processing in metaphoric language. This study analyses the biblical metallurgical metaphors, clarifies terminology and the technical issues. The metaphors range from simple, one sentence constructions to complicated designs, encompassing a whole chapter. An example of the latter is Job 28 containing a complex source domain, including location of resources, mining, metallurgical processing and implied trading – and an equally intricate target domain, relating to wisdom. A key factor of metaphor is the tension between the source and target domains, which focuses attention and initiates reflection on the targeted topic. The metallurgical developments, on which these metaphors are based, were not isolated but occurred in intricate networks of material trading and exchange of technical know-how as clarified in a review of Near Eastern archaeometallurgy.

An Analysis of N. Winther–Nielsen and A.G. Auld on Joshua with Focus on Joshua 5:1 – 6:26, dissertation by Marieke E.J. den Braber

Professional Bible reading is an exclusive subject: it is a trade. The people who practise this trade professionally use respected research methodologies or develop their own. The Scottish scholar Graeme Auld and the Danish scholar Nicolai Winther-Nielsen did the latter. Their respective methods are very different, which was an extra reason to investigate these research methods. The central question is how the choice of data influences their method and analysis. An analysis and comparison of the methods of Winther-Nielsen and Auld for their respective readings of Joshua 5-6 shows their individual strengths and weaknesses. This study also explores what ‘stones’ the methods provide to ‘build’ a reading of the text in church and society, such as a sermon.
